Uzbekistan – Kazakhstan: Strengthening Cooperation to Enhance the Capacity of Prosecutorial Bodies

 

A training course on "The Activities of the Law Enforcement Agencies and Other Authorities of the Republic of Uzbekistan in the Field of Combating Terrorism and Extremism" was organized at the Law Enforcement Academy in the Republic of Uzbekistan based on a request from the Academy of Law Enforcement Bodies under the Prosecutor General's Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The participants of the course consisted of current employees from the Prosecutor General's Office of Kazakhstan and its Academy of Law Enforcement Bodies.

The course program included topics on the causes and factors leading to extremist and terrorist activities, national legislation of the Republic of Uzbekistan on combating extremism and terrorism, prosecutor oversight over the implementation of laws in the field of combating extremism and terrorism, forensic aspects of investigating crimes related to terrorism and extremism, the peculiarities of examining places where terrorist acts have occurred, and other pressing issues.

Training sessions on the topics of “Cyberterrorism: The Role of Religion and Radicalization in the Cyber Space,” “Responsibility for Extremist and Terrorist Activities: Training Issues,” and “Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Those Returned from Conflict Zones: Uzbekistan's Experience” sparked particular interest among the participants.

As part of the training course, several field exercises were organized. In particular, during an exercise held at the Economic Crimes Department under the Prosecutor General's Office of Uzbekistan, information was provided regarding the Department's activities in combating the financing of terrorism.

At the International Islamic Academy of Uzbekistan, the main directions and movements in Islam, the role of the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan and the Committee for Religious Affairs in combating religious fundamentalism, fanaticism, extremism, and terrorism were thoroughly discussed.

During a field training session organized at the Tashkent City Department of Internal Affairs (DIA), participants got closely acquainted with the activities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan in combating extremism and terrorism.

Visits were organized to the Parkent District Prosecutor's Office of Tashkent Region and the Tashkent City Prosecutor's Office to familiarize Kazakh colleagues with the activities of the regional prosecutor's offices in this area.

At the conclusion of the training course, special certificates were awarded to members of the delegation from the Prosecutor General's Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
