A seminar on the topic “Diversion measures, the use of alternative sanctions for juvenile delinquency, and restorative justice (Juvenile justice)” was held at the Law Enforcement Academy of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The event was organized in cooperation with the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the UNICEF office in Uzbekistan to enhance the awareness and professional skills of prosecutorial and investigative personnel on modern approaches to juvenile offenses.
The seminar was attended by representatives of the General Prosecutor’s Office, the Academy, the Investigation department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as well as investigators and other staff from district and city prosecutor’s offices who joined online.
At the event, Geoffrey Ijumba, Deputy Head of the UNICEF Office in Uzbekistan, delivered a speech highlighting the effectiveness and significance of applying restorative practices and alternative measures in addressing juvenile delinquency. He also emphasized their compliance with international standards on children's rights.
As part of the seminar, international expert Renate Winter, former Chair of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, delivered a lecture, sharing international experience and standards in the field of juvenile justice.
The final session was conducted in a “Q&A format”, allowing participants to engage in an in-depth discussion on the application of alternative measures in addressing juvenile delinquency and ensuring criminal justice. The session also provided an opportunity to exchange views on the effectiveness, sustainability, and compliance of these measures with international standards.
