An Academy staff member participated in a training course on the topic: “Current issues, effective measures, and asset recovery in the context of countering money laundering”, organized by the Japan international cooperation agency (JICA) and the United Nations Asia and Far East Institute for the prevention of crime and the treatment of offenders (UNAFEI) as part of the international program “Criminal justice (with a focus on investigation, prosecution, trial, and international cooperation)”.
The event was attended by representatives of prosecution offices, judicial and law enforcement bodies, and researchers from Japan, Bhutan, the Maldives, Laos, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Vietnam, Zambia, and Uzbekistan.
The course covered the FATF recommendations as well as the experiences of countries such as Japan, the United States, Thailand, Bhutan, the Maldives, Laos, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Vietnam, and Zambia.
It also addressed modern methods and tools used for money laundering, the current state and challenges faced by Japan in combating money laundering and terrorist financing, issues related to the organization of financial intelligence; the illicit circulation of crypto-assets and methods and tools for their detection, global trends in money laundering and terrorist financing, the monitoring and identification of money laundering cases, the investigation of cross-border schemes, and procedural measures in criminal cases involving money laundering through the use of crypto-assets.
An Academy representative delivered a presentation on the topic “Combating money laundering and effective countermeasures in Uzbekistan”.
As part of the course, participants also visited the Ministry of justice of Japan (MOJJ) and the Prosecution office for emerging crimes under the Supreme public prosecutor’s office (JPEC), where they learned about their activities and toured the Legal history exhibition hall. A visit was also organized to the Tachikawa branch of the Tokyo district court, where the Academy representative attended a court hearing as an observer.
